Airport Parking and Delayed Flights: What You Need to Know

Delays are the thing people worry about most and the thing car parks handle best. Here is what actually happens to your booking, and the one phone call that makes all of it easier.

The short answer

Your car park knows. Incoming flights are monitored, so a delay, an early arrival or a cancellation is normally picked up before you land, and your return time is adjusted without you doing anything.

That said, a phone call still helps, and there are a few situations where the detail matters.

What if my outbound flight is delayed?

If you have not left home yet, nothing changes - you arrive at the time you booked. Airport parking is priced on the time your car is there, not on your flight.

If you are already at the car park when the delay lands, tell the staff. For Park & Ride there is nothing to change; your car sits where it is. For Meet & Greet the handover has already happened and your car is on its way to the compound.

What if my return flight is delayed?

This is the one people worry about, and it is the one most comprehensively handled.

Operators track incoming flights. A two-hour delay does not mean your car is left at the terminal or that anyone goes home. Your booking simply runs longer.

Call when you land, and again once you have your bags. For Meet & Greet, that second call is what dispatches your car to the terminal car park, so it matters more than the first.

Will I be charged for the extra hours?

Overstay charges are set by each operator and shown in their terms on the car park you choose. Read those before you book rather than after - it is the single most useful thing you can do with five minutes.

Genuine flight delays are normally treated differently from simply coming back later than planned. If a delay looks like it will run long, ring the car park and say so. A conversation before the fact is always easier than a dispute afterwards.

What if my flight is cancelled outright?

Two different situations, and they are worth separating.

Cancelled before you travel: this is a cancellation of your parking booking. Cancellation cover is available at checkout for GBP 2.00, and notice periods are set by the operator. Without cover, whether you get anything back depends on those terms.

Cancelled while you are away: your car stays where it is until you can get back. Tell the car park what has happened and give them a new estimate. They deal with this more often than you would think.

What if I get back early?

Less dramatic, but call ahead. For Meet & Greet your car needs bringing to the terminal, which takes time. For Park & Ride the return shuttle runs to a timetable, so knowing you are coming helps.

Early returns do not usually attract a refund for unused time. Again, the operator's terms are where that lives.

What if I miss my flight entirely?

If you have already handed the car over, ring the car park immediately. For Meet & Greet your keys are with them and you will need the car back, which takes a little arranging. For Park & Ride you have your own keys, so you can simply collect it - though you should still tell them, so your booking is closed off properly.

What to do, in order

Save the car park's number in your phone before you travel. It is in your confirmation email, and it is no use to you in an inbox you cannot reach on airport wifi.

Then: call when you land, call again with your bags, and call as soon as you know about any change. Every problem in this article gets smaller with a phone call and larger without one.
