Diwali 2026 in South India: Travel Guide from the UK

Deepavali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Here is how South India marks the festival, what to sort before you fly from the UK, and how to add a Kerala tour and airport parking to a family visit.

When is Diwali 2026 in South India?

Deepavali falls on Sunday 8 November 2026. Both the Tamil Nadu and Kerala state government holiday lists for 2026 give Deepavali as 8 November, so that is the day families in South India will be lighting lamps and visiting temples.

Across India the festival runs over about five days, but the main day is marked differently in the south. Some almanacs place the early-morning Naraka Chaturdashi rituals on Saturday 7 November in parts of Tamil Nadu, so if you are travelling for a specific family ceremony, check the timing with your relatives or local temple before you book flights.

How is Deepavali in South India different from the north?

In the south, Deepavali is mainly a morning festival that celebrates Krishna's victory over the demon Narakasura; in the north, the focus is the evening Lakshmi Puja and Rama's return to Ayodhya. The lamps, sweets and new clothes are shared, but the rhythm of the day is not.

What is Deepavali like in Kerala?

Kerala marks Deepavali more quietly than Tamil Nadu or Karnataka. Onam and Vishu are the state's biggest festivals, so expect lamps, sweets and temple visits rather than city-wide celebrations. If you want the full early-morning Deepavali atmosphere, plan a day or two with family in Tamil Nadu and then travel on to Kerala to relax.

When should you book a Diwali trip to India from the UK?

Book as early as you can: Diwali is a popular time to fly between the UK and India, and seats tend to fill as November gets closer. Plan in this order:

  • Visa first. British passport holders need a visa for India before travelling – there is no visa on arrival. Apply only on the official Government of India portal, indianvisaonline.gov.in, and allow at least two weeks. Your passport needs at least six months' validity and two blank pages. OCI cardholders can travel on their OCI card with their British passport.
  • Flights next. Kochi (Cochin) is the main airport for central Kerala; Chennai is the usual gateway for Tamil Nadu. Compare direct and one-stop options from Heathrow, Gatwick and other London airports.
  • Then the trip around the family visit. Many families spend the festival days with relatives, then add a few days of travel. That is where a ready-made tour saves you organising hotels, drivers and guides yourself.
  • Last, the journey to the airport. Book your airport parking or a transfer once flight times are fixed.

Diwali 2026 falls after most English schools' October half-term, so if children are travelling, check your school's term dates before you book.

Can you combine a Diwali family visit with a Kerala tour?

Yes – many families visit relatives for the festival and then add a short tour. urbook lists one Kerala holiday package, the six-day Kerala Highlights tour, at £572.67 per person as of October 2026 (international flights not included).

What the Kerala Highlights tour includes

  • Six days, five nights, guided, visiting Alleppey, Thekkady, Munnar and Kochi (Cochin)
  • Hotels, breakfast and dinner
  • Private air-conditioned transport with a driver, and a local English-speaking guide
  • A Shikara boat ride on the Alleppey backwaters
  • Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary in Thekkady and the tea plantations of Munnar
  • Fort Kochi's Chinese fishing nets, St Francis Church, the Jewish Synagogue and the Dutch Palace

The price shown is per person in pounds and is fixed when you book; one traveller pays the single-occupancy rate, two or more pay the shared-room rate each. Visa fees and international flights are extra. See the package and its dates on urbook holidays.

What is the weather like in Kerala in November?

Early November is the tail end of Kerala's northeast monsoon, so expect warm days with some afternoon showers. The backwaters and tea hills are lush and green at this time. Pack a light rain layer, and keep outdoor plans flexible.

How urbook checks its holiday partners

urbook checks each holiday partner's licence and that they are eligible to operate, and has a signed memorandum with every partner. The tour itself is run by the operator named on your confirmation, and urbook acts as your booking agent – it handles your booking, your payment and any refund due. That matters when you are booking a once-a-year family trip with a brand that may be new to you.

How do you get to the airport for a Diwali flight?

Arrive at the airport three hours before a long-haul flight to India. For an early departure with family and luggage, a pre-booked parking space or a door-to-door transfer takes the stress out of the morning.

  • Heathrow parking: urbook lists Heathrow parking from £58.30 for 7 days (checked 1 October 2026) – compare Meet & Greet, Park & Ride and long stay on the Heathrow airport parking page.
  • Luton parking: from £65.19 for 7 days (checked 1 October 2026) on the Luton airport parking page.
  • Transfers: vehicles for 2 to 8 passengers, useful when the whole family and the gifts are coming – see Heathrow airport transfers.

If you add parking or a transfer to the Kerala holiday at checkout, it goes on the same booking reference with one payment – the holiday, the drive and the parking together. That is urbook: your booking, sorted. Read how holiday, parking and transfer work in one booking, and how early to arrive at Heathrow.

What should you pack for Diwali in South India?

Pack new or festive clothes for the day itself, gifts for family, and modest clothing for temple visits (shoulders and knees covered; you will remove your shoes). Add a light rain jacket, mosquito repellent and any medicines in your hand luggage. Check the UK government's travel advice for India on gov.uk shortly before you fly, as entry rules can change.

Last checked: October 2026. Prices change – check the live price on urbook before you book.
